Nigella sativa is a small black seed that comes from a flowering plant in the Ranunculaceae family. Native to southwest Asia and the Mediterranean, it now grows throughout India, the Middle East, and Europe. Nigella sativa has been used for centuries in herbal medicine. It has also long been used as a spice and food preservative. One of the oldest spices known to be used, nigella seeds or sativa were found in Tutankhamuns tomb and are mentioned in the Bibles Old Testament, although their use is not clear. The tiny black seeds have a slightly bitter taste with some of the pungency of onion, but also offer many other subtle nuances of flavor. Their appearance means they are commonly called black onion seeds, but they have nothing to do with the onion family. They are an original and non-challenging spice with which to experiment.
